Welcome to the Iron Goat Trail Website

Help construct and maintain the Iron Goat Trail by participating in a construction or maintenance work party. Feel good about what you accomplish and have fun at the same time! Typical tasks are clearing and excavating for trail tread and constructing drainage structures. Work parties are fun and rewarding, but they are hard work and can be strenuous. Participants need to be in good physical condition, although not everyone will need to move boulders as shown in the photo on the right. Some tasks are as easy as pruning off protruding branches with loppers. Groups as well as individuals are encouraged to participate.

Flexibility is vital to effective scheduling of trail construction and maintenance work parties. Work project and site location for each work party will vary due to weather, specific needs and work party strength. To sign up visit the VOW website calendar. In general there are work parties most Wednesdays and Saturdays, May through October, and during the Volunteer Vacation Week.

Projects for this year

Typical projects

Much of our time early in the season is spent repairing damage from the previous winter. This can include anything from clearing debris off the trail to logging out downed timber to repairing or replacing culverts and other drainage structures.

After the trail is cleaned up a large part of our time is spent on normal maintenance which consists primarily of tread cleaning and restoration and brush removal.

We are also currently engaged in constructing a connector trail in the Wild Sky Wilderness to connect the Martin Creek Trailhead with the existing Kelley Creek Trail. This work is done with hand tools only and can be demanding, but is also extremely rewarding. You will be helping to construct a completely new trail through rugged terrain and you will be working in an area that has seen little if any prior encroachment by humans.

What to wear and bring

Sturdy boots, work gloves, long sleeve shirt and long pants. Hardhats are required and will be furnished. Bring a daypack with rain gear, warm sweater, plenty of food and liquids.

Sign up for work parties online at www.trailvolunteers.org or call the VOW office at (206) 517-3019. Be sure to sign up at least two days before the work party to assure your reservation. It is important to check the website calendar for work party info because there are various locations where work parties can meet.  The calendar will state the trailhead at which to meet for the work party.  Except during Volunteer Vacation, most people come up just for the day. Nearby overnight camping is available; check with the VOW office.

Each volunteer is expected to provide his or her own transportation to the trailhead. VOW does not have the ability to maintain a formal car-pooling program. However, if you need a ride, please indicate that when you sign up and we will try to arrange a ride with another volunteer. Each rider is expected to contribute to the driver $10 round trip to help defray the cost of gas.
